Afghanistan keep semifinal hopes alive with seven-wicket win
Afghanistan moved a step closer to their dream of making the semifinal of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup after they beat Netherlands by seven wickets on Friday.
Afghanistan have now won four games in the competition and have eight points in their kitty.
On Friday after opting to bat Netherlands managed to make just 179 in 46.3 overs and in response Afghanistan chased the target in just 31.3 overs to finish on 181 for three.
Earlier, Netherlands was well served by a second wicket stand between Max O'Dowd and Colin Ackermann. This stand was worth 70 runs for the second wicket. Then Sybrand Engelbrecht (58: 86b, 6x4) carried the innings forward. But the innings was not helped by four run-outs. None of the other batters offered any kind of resistance. Netherlands was bowled out for 179 in 46.3 overs. For Afghanistan Mohammad Nabi (3-28) and Noor Ahmad (2-31) were the best bowlers.
In their response Afghanistan was reduced to 55 for two. Then skipper Hashamatullah Shahidi took charge of the innings. Shahid finished unbeaten on 56 off 64 balls with six boundaries. Shahidi and Rahmat Shah added 74 runs for the third wicket. Shah made 52 off 54 balls with eight boundaries. In the end Shahidi added an unbroken 52 runs for the fourth wicket with Azmatullah Omarzai. Afghanistan finished on 181 for three in 31.3 overs to win by seven wickets.
