Day 1 of the second Test match between South Africa and India in the two-match series showcased a dominant performance by the bowlers.

The Newlands Park in Cape Town witnessed a total of 23 wickets falling on the opening day. Winning the toss, South Africa opted to bat first but was dismissed for just 55 runs. However, they bounced back strongly to dismiss India for 153 runs. By the end of Day 1, the hosts, in their second innings, were 62 for three, trailing by 36 runs.

South Africa struggled with the bat, with Mohammed Siraj leading the bowling attack for India, claiming six wickets and preventing the Proteas batters from settling. No South African batsman managed to surpass the 20-run mark, and Kyle Verreynee (15:30b, 1x4) top-scored for his team. Apart from Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar also secured two wickets each for India.

India faced a shaky start in their innings, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck. However, skipper Rohit Sharma (39:50b, 7x4) and Shubman Gill (36: 55b, 5x4) steadied the ship with a 55-run partnership for the second wicket. Virat Kohli (46:59b, 6x4, 1x6) played a valuable innings, contributing despite wickets falling around him. After tea, India's fortunes took a downturn as they lost six wickets without adding any runs, eventually being bowled out for 153. South Africa's Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Nandre Burger each took three wickets.

In the second innings, South Africa faced early setbacks, losing Dean Elgar (12:28b, 2x4), Tony de Zorzi, and Tristan Stubbs for just 45 runs. Aiden Markram (36 not out: 51b, 6x4) anchored the innings with David Bedingham. At stumps on Day 1, South Africa were 62 for three, trailing by 36 runs.
